Mentor-Mentee SignUps!

Thursday, October 8th, 2009

Mentor Mentee has Begun!

If you didnt make it to the GBM, we are now taking signups for the mentor/mentee program.  If youre a transfer, sophmore, or freshman who wants to meet someone that can tell you the best tips about your track, or if youre an upperclassman who wants to share your experiences with BENG classes, research experience, and other advice you have to give, then give Kyle an email ASAP to jbrubake[at]ucsd[dot]edu with your Name, Track, Year and whether you want to be a mentor or mentee.

We’ll be hosting mentor mentee events all year.  The first event is just around the corner!   Send in your info and we can put you on the list for “Speed Mentoring”, where mentees have a few minutes chat with each mentor, find the right fit, and select his top mentor choices.  And if you cant make it that night? No worries, we will have mentor profiles online so you can select your favorite.

Hurry up, you dont want to miss this!

Bioengineering Freshman Survival Guide

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

Wish someone had given you insider advice when you were a freshman? If you could repeat your first years, what would you do differently? BMES is compiling its first “Bioengineering Student Survival Guide,” an informal guide encompassing valuable advice for incoming bioengineering freshmen!

Impart your wisdom to the next generation by writing short blurbs about anything bioengineering related– classes, research, teaching, student life, industry, summer opportunities, professional school, networking, volunteering, and more. All advice is welcome and will remain anonymous. Potential advice could be about: planning out course loads, studying effectively, switching tracks, succeeding in laboratory or programming classes, searching/applying for research positions, being a good TA, working on senior design projects, getting letters of recommendation, writing personal statements, applying for jobs, etc.

Take the time to help out freshmen by reflecting on what worked (and didn’t work!) for you. Please email your blurbs, separated by topic, to Melody Chung (m3chung[at]ucsd[dot]edu). Include your track if you have track-specific advice.
