White Labs
2pm Friday, January 18, 2008
Come out to White Labs with us and get a first hand look at how you can apply bioengineering in a unique field! White Labs makes a lot of yeast for local microbrewers, including the nearby Rock Bottom. President and founder Chris White will be showing us how different yeasts affect the taste of beer as well as giving us a tour of the facilities. Because alcohol is involved, this event will be restricted to those 21 and over.

Invitrogen
2pm Wednesday, February 13, 2008
Invitrogen is giving BMES a tour of their Carlsbad facilities, which will be conducted by a member of the Manufacturing or R&D departments. After the tour, you will get an exclusive chance to talk to HR representatives about Invitrogen’s internship and job opportunities as well as submit your resume to the pervasive company.

RSVP deadline: noon on Friday, January 25, 2008

All RSVPs should include your name, email address, cell phone number, and whether or not you can drive for the tour, and be sent to Stephanie Fan at s1fan@ucsd.edu.

NOTE: As a new policy, any students who cancel their RSVP after the RSVP deadline will not be permitted to participate in future tours.

Winter Quarter is just around the quarter (even though it may not feel like it with midterms)! Here’s an update on a couple of industry events:

January 18th: Tour of White Labs

PLEASE NOTE: If you have RSVP’d for a tour and can no longer make it, you must let Stephanie Fan (s1fan@ucsd.edu) know at least 2 weeks before the tour date unless otherwise noted. Otherwise, you will be barred from participating in any future tours; no shows will also be barred from going on future tours.

We just kicked off BMES Industry Nights for the 2007-08 school year! ev3 came to talk about their company and opportunities for UCSD students in their company.

A special thanks to ev3’s Neurovascular Division’s President Matthew Jenusaitis () and VP of R&D Earl Slee () for coming out to give such a great presentation!

Afterwards, participants will be given free admission into the SD Wild Animal Park tickets are usually $33, so take advantage of this opportunity! We will return to campus by 4pm, although earlier rides back to campus will be arranged if participants need them.

BMES @ UCSD has won the Meritorious Achievement Award for the third year in a row. The award is given to the best chapter in the nation, which is determined by the types and quality of events that are held and described in our Chapter Development Report (it was three inches thick!).

I hope you all will join me in congratulating last year’s officers for their stupendous job and look forward to another exciting year of fun and excellence :).
