Get Involved!

BMES offers a variety of opportunities that members can take advantage of. With these you can make lasting friendships, and gain experience by planning events, writing articles, giving back to the community, and many more! Below is a list of ways you can get involved, including links to committee webpages and contact info. What are you waiting for?

Bioengineering Day
Kellie Lim | kmlim[at]ucsd[dot]edu
Suraj Kedarisetty | skedaris[at]ucsd[dot]edu
The Bioengineering Day committee is responsible for planning, organizing, and putting on the annual Bioengineering Day event. This day-long event serves to bring together undergraduates with faculty members, as well as prominent members of both academia and industry through keynote speakers, company presentations, and social mixers. Throughout the day, undergraduate achievement will be showcased at the Poster Expo, while the highlight of the night is the Bioengineering Quiz Bowl, a game show in which teams of students are pitted against each other (and the audience) in a test of knowledge gained in class.

BioEngineering Quarterly
Reni Biswas | rbiswas[at]ucsd[dot]edu
Ryan Chuang | rychuang[at]ucsd[dot]edu
The BEQ, BioEngineering Quarterly, is the official newsletter of the BMES that shares articles meant to keep you up-to-date on the happenings in the Bioengineering field. Whether it is on research, industry, or people the newsletter showcases a variety of articles written by Bioengineering students. The newsletter is widely viewed by faculty and representatives from industry so get your name known - write us an article, conduct an interview, share with us your experience during your internship, and add a whole new layer to your professional development.

Historian
Christina Kim | csk013[at]ucsd[dot]edu
The Historian Committee designs, produces, and distributes the BMES yearbook and brochures. Our members are actively involved in BMES and will be required to attend, photograph, and write about BMES events. Those who participate in our committee will become intimately involved with BMES, gain inside perspective on the organization, and meet many of its members. The committee is also a great stepping stone for leadership within BMES. Experience in design, photography, and/or newsletter writing is preferred, but not required.
International
|
The International Committee will primarily work with the national BMES and not UCSD BMES. The first, immediate, objective is to continue building an international departmental contact list to help build a stronger worldwide bioengineering network that can help faculty and students connect internationally. The next objective is to create a resource of international opportunities, especially for BMES students looking to apply their degree globally. The main focuses of this graduate and undergraduate list would be opportunities to participate in lab exchanges, industry internships, and engineering-based design project through companies, universities, and non-profit organizations. Once these databases are established, the plan is to make them available on the national BMES website, in hopes of creating a larger Biomedical Engineering network. Concurrently, we are also trying to expand the international base of BMES chapters.
Mentor/Mentee
Kyle Brubaker  |  jbrubake[at]ucsd[dot]edu
The Mentor/Mentee program aims to match participants with a mentor or mentee. Mentees can benefit by receiving advice on classes, career paths, preparation for post-grad programs, research involvement, the balance of life and school, and more! Mentors are encouraged to participate by keeping in contact with their mentees, offering advice, and inspiration.

Outreach
Robert Amezquita | ramezqui[at]ucsd[dot]edu
Amanda Hanson | ashanson[at]ucsd[dot]edu
Robert and Amanda have a strong grasp on engineering and would love to spread it to school children. To motivate the kids to consider their interests in science and engineering, this committee has created many activities and events to interact with local school children. Help is always welcome, especially to think of innovative experiments that are simple yet interesting, and need enough people to carry out the work. Join this committee if you enjoy spending time with children and fostering their interest in the science and engineering, especially geared towards bioengineering.
