Bioengineering Freshman Survival Guide

April 29th, 2009

Wish someone had given you insider advice when you were a freshman? If you could repeat your first years, what would you do differently? BMES is compiling its first “Bioengineering Student Survival Guide,” an informal guide encompassing valuable advice for incoming bioengineering freshmen!

Impart your wisdom to the next generation by writing short blurbs about anything bioengineering related– classes, research, teaching, student life, industry, summer opportunities, professional school, networking, volunteering, and more. All advice is welcome and will remain anonymous. Potential advice could be about: planning out course loads, studying effectively, switching tracks, succeeding in laboratory or programming classes, searching/applying for research positions, being a good TA, working on senior design projects, getting letters of recommendation, writing personal statements, applying for jobs, etc.

Take the time to help out freshmen by reflecting on what worked (and didn’t work!) for you. Please email your blurbs, separated by topic, to Melody Chung (m3chung[at]ucsd[dot]edu). Include your track if you have track-specific advice.

Junkyard Derby!

April 29th, 2009

Building begins in NEXT WEEK! We need people interested in building the fastest and most creative cart in this build project. Late night
welding sessions, daring test rides, and cutting edge design will be happening, with over 48 hours of opportunity for you to get involved.

For those quick with their math, you’re right, that does mean the potential for 48 points! We can have up to 5 builders in the ‘build
area’ at any one time, so please respond if you’re interested! Contact Stevie (msharson[at]ucsd[dot]edu) with any questions or if you are interested in building.

Got some spare time before the Derby? Come out this Saturday (5/2) to help collect junk. The more people there, the better (and better) junk
we can get. Additionally, we’ll also get a head start into the junkyard if we have people help collect junk. It’s a win-win situation! For more details, contact Rashi (rkhare[at]ucsd[dot]edu).

Engineering Explorations
